Try Something New
Last night I decided to try something out of my comfort zone,(literally, it was 114 degrees outside) by attending the Brad Paisley Weekend Warrior Word Tour.  I invited myself along and am glad I did, not only did I get to spend time with my daughters, but it was a nice re-introduction to country music.  There was a lot of cowboy boots and denim, it made me appreciate the loyalty of country fans to stand out in the intense heat to enjoy the music.
 It's nice to do something unexpected, you don't have to do something quite so drastic, just something different so you don't suffer from the summer blues.  And although Brad Paisley joked about our "dry heat", until you've experienced the crushing humidity along with the heat that some places have, you have no idea of the meaning of dry heat.

Forget about the heat and have a wild and wacky weekend

Many pet owners will be taking their pets to work with them tomorrow, as a way of honoring homeless pets and the shelters who are hoping for people to come in and adopt a new family member.  We are lucky to share our lives with two big dogs and three lazy cats who can all cause a mess every so often.  There are many common household cleaning products that can be harmful to our pets, as well as, young children and adults.  Here are a few green cleaning tips to help keep you and your pets safe:
Vinegar-
​Vinegar can be used for removing dirt and stains on carpeting and is a good all natural cleaner, you can mix it with a little salt or cornstarch for a little scrubbing power, if needed.  Be sure to check with the carpet manufacturer or test on a small surface  to ensure colorfastness and resiliency.  Vinegar is also a great all-purpose cleaner, combine 1/2 cup of white vinegar to a gallon of water and pour into a clean spray bottle for an inexpensive way to cut through most dog related messes.  You can also use it to clean your dog's plastic and rubber toys, brushes and combs.
Baking soda-
Baking soda is a great inexpensive substitute for scouring cleansers, and it can deodorize as it cleans.  Tubs, sinks and floors will shine after using it and you can even sprinkle a little on carpets and upholstery to remove pet odors.  It also helps cut cat box odors by sprinkling a little in the bottom of the box before you put cat litter in it.
Check the Ingredients
Cleaning products that contain such ingredients as: bleach, chlorine, ammonia, gycol etheres or formaldehyde (Just to name a few.)put pets, children and adults at risk for liver or kidney damage, anemia and can be carcinogenic.  These can be found in floor cleaners, bathroom cleaners, all purpose cleaners, drain openers, glass cleaners, laundry detergent, as well as, a few dog shampoos.
There are many pet safe products out there, if you do decide to use toxic cleaners, be sure to put them away, preferably in a high spot away from nosy kids and pets.  Use them only when your pets and kids are not in the same room and make sure there is not any residue left behind.

During the lazy days of summer the one thing probably don't feel like celebrating is the Summer Solstice, unless you like really long days that have 14 hours and 22 minutes of daylight to be exact.  It's too bad that the longest day of the year is also one of the hottest.
Cool Update to recent blog about using coconut oil for cleaning
Last weekend I decided to try cleaning our strappy, metal chaise lounges that we have had for over six years.  They sit outside year round and I really didn't expect them to last this long.  The plastic straps were pretty dirty and had rust stains on them, so I sprayed off what I could and used a mixture of coconut oil and baking soda on them and let it sit for about an hour.  I sprayed them off again and scrubbed a little bit with a washcloth.  I am happy to report that they look and feel so much better, and I am not embarrassed to have people sit on them.  Has anyone else found something unusual to clean with coconut oil?

Here is a good tip to make your windows and mirrors shine without having to run to the store if you run out of your favorite cleaner.  You can use simple ingredients that you should have on hand.  Just mix them up and you will have a environmentally friendly glass cleaner that is inexpensive to make and will make your glass shine.
DIY  Glass Cleaner
2 cups water
1/2 cup vinegar
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol (70% concentrate)
Combine ingredients and store in a spray bottle.  Spray on paper towel or clean, soft cloth and clean away.   DO NOT try to clean windows on a hot and sunny day like today, the solution will dry to quickly and it will leave streaks.
