It may appear to be a difficult endeavor, but once you know what you have, determining what you truly need becomes much easier. You might be shocked how many additional pens, folders, sticky notes, and other things you've had all along! Create three heaps when sorting through your office items: keep, archive, and garbage. Things you'll need on a daily and weekly basis should go in the "keep" pile. Important papers and information that must be retained but do not need to be seen every day should go in the "archive" pile. This category can be divided into two sub-groups: one for yearly storage and the other for long-term storage. Finally, the "trash" pile should comprise objects that may be discarded or recycled.
